Title: Cyberranges for security awareness and education

Abstract: "Capture the flag" is a well-known competition type that has enabled many hackers to develop and test their skills in cybersecurity. In addition many more types of gamified learning exist, such as attack-defense games. Cyberranges are organized platforms that can host these learning experiences, and they are being used in educational settings around the world, including regular higher education.

The lightning talk aims to bring together people in education interested in collaborating on the "JointCyberRange.nl". Presumably we can then schedule an impromptu workshop to exchange ideas.

Description: Cyberranges are an education platform for cybersecurity. Offensive and defensive cybersecurity is practiced in a secure environment. It engages students though gamification. Every assignment earns points, which makes learning fun and a bit competitive. Teachers can select predefined classes, including learning materials, or develop their own exercises. Exercises can take many forms, including Capture the Flag (CTF).

In the Netherlands we have joined forces in higher education to build the ‘jointcyberrange.nl’. The Joint Cyber Range combines curated cybersecurity courseware with a ‘Cyberrange-as-a-service’. It is delivered as a hosted service, so teachers can have their classes up and running in less than an hour. Each class will have its own private environment completely separated from the other tenants on the platform. Research has shown that this type of project and practice-based education is possibly the most effective way to develop cyber resilience capabilities. The platform is hosted on European servers, ensuring maximum digital sovereignty. The platform, its courseware, and the live exercises are developed by a collaboration of higher education instructors and their students and is curated by the Joint Cyber Range team.
